Living Lab Tomsk Network

Living Lab Tomsk Network

Living Lab Tomsk Network (LLTNET) is a perfect example of universities’ campus as a living lab for sustainability and encouraging entrepreneurial potential of young generations. LLTNET is initiated by the team of professionals from triple helix organizations (universities of Tomsk, innovative companies and architectural bureaus, and regional and city administrations) and in cooperation with European partners. LLTNET is governed by the Tomsk Consortium consisting of seven universities, ten academic institutes and Tomsk Scientific Center of the SB RAS with the purpose to attract and retain talents through human capital engagement in the city development. Living Lab Tomsk has 7 locations in its network, each with its focus of experiments (public space design, smart greening, water management, smart management, dialog of generations, healthy lifestyle, multicultural environments, street art and creativity). A variety of experiments is initiated and implemented by students organized in temporary design studios and working together with professionals. ´By students for students´ is a great example of user innovation, forming a culture of experiments on campuses to support the entrepreneurial spirit of 60K students coming from different cities and countries.

Projects

LLTNET started in 2018 with the Living Lab Tomsk One (LLT1) initiative, in its framework 8 experiments in the fields of smart city and urban environment have been implemented to date. Among them are smart monitoring system for free parking spots; smart system for pedestrian and automobile traffic monitoring and analysis; intellectual lightening for comfortable, sustainable and adjustable street light; AR-solution for touristic industry; integration of architectural heritage in the modern city life; involvement of citizens in the account of the existing plants with the use of a specific information system.

The biggest experiment was about entrepreneurial public space design and had been in progress from October 2018 to October 2020. It engaged 78 partners and stakeholders, 500 unique users and 6 local communities, as well as 45 young professionals in the design studio. The results are summarized in our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAizsGfBQ3ex5Nru9qVF1UA

Methologies

The engagement of stakeholders, locals, the student network and international actors is fundamental to maintain a sustainable participatory design process. Users are involved in co-design at each stage of the design and implementation process. To make LLTNET innovative and avoid trivial solutions that appear as a result of focusing on the opinion of the users majority we improved participatory practices by applying methods used for new product development and diffusion, namely, lead-user method, customer development (lean start-up principles) and Roger’s curve (The Technology Life Cycle Adoption Curve) linked to design stages. Lead-users and innovators are involved at the early stages of design where ideation and new solutions are critical, while the early majority can test concepts.
