Smart Living Lab

Smart Living Lab

The Smart Living Lab drives innovation through interdisciplinary research and experimentation. The pursued projects aim on translating its ambitious goal of providing comfort to users while developing sustainable and long-term solutions for the future of the built environment.

Inaugurated in 2014, the Smart Living Lab is located on a former industrial site close to the centre of Fribourg, Switzerland, as part of the Bluefactory innovation district and embedded in its urban surroundings.

Aligned to the Swiss innovation strategy at the heart of the Switzerland Innovation Park Network West EPFL, it contributes to develop a local innovation hub and receives the support of the Canton of Fribourg. The activities are led by a research consortium, and combine the expertise from three Swiss institutions of higher education: the EPFL, the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (HEIA-FR), and the University of Fribourg (UNIFR).

Individual researchers and research teams perform fundamental and applied research, develop new technologies and in-depth investigation on various complementary subjects to the built environment, such as construction technologies, energy systems, well-being and behaviours, interactions and design processes.

One of the most prominent project is the building for the Smart Living Lab. A permanent testing site through modular, changeable, and adjustable layout, while simultaneously serving as the workplace for 130 researchers. It intends to be a testing facility itself, providing ground to carry out research in real-life conditions and allowing co-creation of knowledge while hosting permanently the multidisciplinary living laboratory. Every aspect of the building will allow the development and the exchange of knowledge with local companies, from extraction of resources to construction, usage, maintenance, deconstruction, and end of life cycle.

Another important research prototype for the purposes of energy management, user comfort and interactions inside the Smart Living Lab is the “NeighborHub”. Winner of the Solar Decathlon housing competition 2017 in Denver, USA, the Swiss solar house was designed by students from four higher education institutions (EPFL, HEIA-FR, HEAD, and UNIFR), and has been reconstructed at the Bluefactory site. The house offers a new collective and sustainable way of living, and is a meeting place for citizens wishing to develop solutions to facilitate a more sustainable future.

The Smart Living Lab has the permanent goal to keep its development focused on being an international centre of scientific competence in its core research areas, while strengthening ties with local stakeholders and industry partners. More details on www.smartlivinglab.ch.

Imagining the Green Cities of the Future: Global Cases – Workshop

Thursday, 14 Mar 2024
Online
This is a role-play where each participant will embody a key figure in society. Together, we will collaboratively craft strategies aimed at fostering a sustainable future by envisioning the world in 2050. The focus lies on various cities worldwide, each poised for a green transition. Through dialogue and negotiation, the aim is to forge agreements that pave the way for necessary actions and initiatives.
