Innovate Dementia

Innovate Dementia

The Innovate Dementia Transnational Living Lab is hosted by the Centre for Collaborative Innovation in Dementia at Liverpool John Moores University. The work and structure of the living lab is underpinned by the innovate dementia project, a three year European 5.4 million euro funded project which started on the 1st April 2012. The Innovate Dementia partnership is a consortium with ten partners from North West Europe; Liverpool John Moores Univerisity (UK), Mersey Care NHS Trust (UK), Alexianer Krefeld Research Centre (D), Expertise Center Dementia Flanders (BE), university college Thomas More (BE), nursing home Sint-Augustinus Diest (BE), City of Eindhoven (NL), Mental Health Care Institution Eindhoven (NL), Eindhoven University of Technology (NL) and Brainport Development (NL).

The partnership is exploring ways of developing innovative approaches to dementia care which is based upon the concern that dementia is a significant European and global issue with dementia cases expected to rise significantly in North West Europe by 2025. Innovate Dementia aims to address these concerns by placing people living with dementia at the centre of the research-to-innovation process. The project also aims to raise awareness around the use of innovative and technological-based care models which includes supporting the move towards community-based dementia care. The Innovate Dementia partnership established living labs’ in order to test and evaluative innovative dementia care models, focusing specifically on key elements of integrated care.

As a living lab with a dementia focus we are especially interested in participating and contributing to the thematic sub group of ‘Well Being and Health’. Further to this sub-theme we are also interested in the sub-theme ‘Social Innovation and Social Inclusion’, this is particularly important in the dementia field where people living with dementia can become social isolated.

References and Track Record

The outcomes of the project so far demonstrate that even small social innovations such as co-creating a memory enabling app can have a positive impact upon the social network of people living with dementia, they feel empowered and just as importantly they feel they are making a real difference to their lives and other people lives.

The work of each living lab is shaped by the project’s overarching work areas:

Intelligent Lightning,

  • Nutrition and exercise,
  • Living environment with social and aesthetic conditions,
  • Models of assistance for persons with dementia and their carers

Within these work areas specific work is ongoing which includes for instance the installation of dynamic lights and soft fencing into an inpatient facility for people with dementia or at peoples own homes, a 20 week facilitated exercise programme for people with dementia and their carer is developed to start exploring physical, psychological and social wellbeing, special nutrition programmes like finger food and an adjusted breakfast shake, adaptations to the living environment like the testing of smart sensors (intelligent calendar, smart beds and adapted smartphone designed for elderly) and modules have been defined which are necessary for creating a dementia network.

The Innovate Dementia Living Lab is very willing to share their gained knowledge and experience with other Living Labs or triple helix organisations. We present at conferences and submit papers to disseminate our results with a focus on growing our networks. We organise events specifically for the end-users, people with dementia and their carers, to inform them about new developments. This open approach is also used as a way of engaging with SMEs to engendered buy-in to the Living Lab, an advantage of this approach for SMEs is that the results of their products will be shared and promoted widely. As a Living Lab we benefit from the enthusiasm of SMEs who are willing to participate in pilots and join our events.

Our living lab uses different channels for public visibility, communication and interaction through the public website and facebook page (www.innovatedementia.eu and www.facebook.com/innovatedementia).

Online
This is a role-play where each participant will embody a key figure in society. Together, we will collaboratively craft strategies aimed at fostering a sustainable future by envisioning the world in 2050. The focus lies on various cities worldwide, each poised for a green transition. Through dialogue and negotiation, the aim is to forge agreements that pave the way for necessary actions and initiatives.
