Alimentta’s biggest strengths as a living lab rely on its trans-disciplinary approach to the sustainable food transition, its vast network of collaborators and its political influence. The structure of the living lab in four working groups (agroecosystems and food chains, marine ecosystems and fisheries, public policies, nutrition and health) allows Alimentta to organise action with a holistic and articulated vision. The Living Lab is steered by 10 partners – seasoned researchers in their fields, as well as part of social entities, movements and NGOs -, a team of paid technicians, 29 collaborators from the quadruple helix and a broader community of practice. Expert knowledge and social engagement materialize on the ground in the form of ALAS (Agroecology-Based Local Agri-Food Systems), an integrative approach to building highly adaptative, territorialised, sustainable food systems involving actors covering the totality of the food chain. Although the establishment of ALAs is the centerpiece of the Living Lab, other projects thematically linked to the working groups are equally considered (i.e. the introduction of antique varieties of wheat in the Andalucian diet, the establishment of biodistricts, etc). Thanks to its particular organisation, extensive network and dissemination activities, Alimentta operates at a regional level while achieving national impact.
