Krakow Technology Park is one of the key actors in co-creating and implementing the Regional Innovation Strategy and promoting smart specialization and user-driven innovation approaches in the region. It was established in 1997 as the joint initiative of city authorities, Malopolska regional authorities and Krakow’s three largest universities: Krakow University of Technology, AGH – UST University of Science and Technology and the Jagiellonian University.

Krakow Technology Park, as a unit responsible for managing not only the special technology park and incubator but also a special economic zone in Regions of Malopolska and Podkarpacie is focusing on internationalization of activities, especially when it comes to the small businesses which are supported by KTP along with medium and big companies. KPT mission is to support businesses at all stages, so they can develop by collaborating with one another. The scope of services for businesses includes the possibility of financing innovative projects as part of the KTP Seed Fund. Companies may count on free-of-charge advisory services, and training on managing business and developing the technological aspects of enterprises using advantage of up to date multimedia laboratories and studios run by KPT. Businesses that have already developed and are ready to implement new investments received from the KTP an opportunity to acquire public aid from the title of operation within the special economic zone (SEZ), together with a package of related services.

Innovation initiatives such as Apps4Krk, Malopolska Information Technology Park (MPTI), Krakow living Lab, Watify are examples of Smart City initiatives strengthening and enriching the Development Strategy of Krakow 2014-2020 and Regional City Strategy, with emphasis on Regional Innovation Strategy as the operational act.

KTP collaborates very actively with regional and local government, universities, NGO’s, business sector and local community, at the time when straight conversation and new approaches are needed to stimulate economy development and implement innovations. KPT plays a significant role as regional enabler and facilitator of innovative driven approach to smart city development. Development of innovative user centered and sustainable new public services for increasing the quality of life and wellbeing within different domains (people, living, mobility, e-governance, economy, environment) and targeted to different user groups (elderly, children, students, unemployed people, NGOs  and so on) using potential of experience, know-how and infrastructure of stakeholders: businesses, administration, universities is our advantage.

Open Data and Increased Transparency:

Krakow Technology Park thanks to learnt best practices during SMART_KOM project has been at the forefront of the open data movement over the last 2 years, most obviously through the aforementioned project. It has among others encouraged the City of Krakow to issue the act on opening data. KPT is supporting the City of Krakow in realization the mission to open up public data from to everyone basing on best practices and know-how of the foreign experts.

The road map of opening data in Krakow with defined stages, clear process of opening the data and stakeholders has been identified within the SMART_KOM strategy. It is worth menthioning here, that Krakow among other Polish cities is one of the pilot cities to start open data process.

Smart City adaptative model

Joint Smart City Strategy for Krakow and 14 communities within Krakow Metropolitan Area

It is the comprehensive and unic approach of adaptive responsive city, citizens driven strategy, city as enabler in contrary to silos oriented management. The basic idea behind it is to equip the city and metropolitan region in such tools of new technologies (eg. ICT, ITeS), which will increase citizens’ influence on shaping the development of the city and metropolitan area.

KPT is a leader of the project has created the roadmap for intelligent solutions in the Krakow Metropolitan Area, including a set of strategic direction and specific recommendations for four areas of Krakow and KMA development in line with the idea of smart city. In addition to the SMART_KOM strategy a bank of projects to the financed within the framework of the Małopolska Regional Operational Programme (including Integrated Territorial Investment Projects), Innovation and Development Operational Programme, Horizon 2020 has been created. It is first document as such being a joint work of almost 400 experts representing administration, business, NGO and science.

The SMART_KOM strategy has proved that smart participation plays a key role in creation of strategy and is one of key components of an open, smart, and citizen-friendly city.

Empowering Innovation and optimalisation of the product or service: living lab

One of key goals of KPT activities as the technology park is to stimulate the innovative capabilities of the companies by supporting them in delivery the product according to the market requirements and expectations.

Within the agreement signed with City of Krakow and Marshall Office of Malopolska Region KPT delivers advisory and consultancy for companies. It is the escalator for product and service development, both created and designed for citizens – participatory driven process of designing city infrastructure and functions, with respect to the rest of the city’s ICT ecosystem.

To achieve this goal, KPT has been actively supporting City of Krakow in offering e.g., API’s for developers, as well as in organizing developer events and competitions, e.g. Apps4Krk, Hackathons, TEDex or other events addressed to ICT ecosystem actors. One of the key benefits of the initiative has been the creation of financial tool for Regional Authorities to support innovation in the region. The financial instrument will encourage the creation of innovative products and services that are changing the way citizens interact with their city.
