Epica Lab

Epica Lab

Fundación Épica La Fura dels Baus (Epica) is a space for knowledge transfer and mutual learning. Based on the sum up of talents and collaborative creation. The Foundation promotes the horizontal collaboration between science, technology, and humanities, as the catalyzer for disruptive R+D+I in the new digital era and acts as a natural connector between society, academia, public administrations and companies.

Thanks to the experience gathered in last 40 years of history of its patrons La Fura dels Baus, Epica has distilled a methodology where, performing arts is the proper vehicle for these new R+D+I processes, enabling to:

  1. Promote the knowledge transfer between disciplines and to civil society.
  2. Actively engage into the same ecosystem and processes all quadruple helix agents, through common language.
  3. Establish the proper sandbox for co-design, experiment, develop, validate, and experience potential future realities and situations (fake realities), new technologies, products and/or processes, through anticipatory arts.

Using performing arts, Epica proposes a novel methodology and vision of the co-creation and collaborative innovation process able to create a neutral environment for cross-research and mutual learning between disciplines and between different players (citizenship, researchers, institutions, companies).

Epica main mission is to position the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) as relevant agents together with science and technology in the necessary R+D+I processes to face the global challenges of the 21st century. To reach this objective, Epica develops four main lines of activities:

  • R+D+I activities
  • Sociocultural and Territory activities
  • Residences
  • Dissemination, knowledge transfer and internationalization

R+D+I activities. Under this line, Epica develops co-creation workshops based on the challenges or theories proposed by scientists, experts, or researchers. The processes close with a performance created by a group of creatives/ciytizens based on acquired knowledge and a debate in which the public participates actively. This line of activities encourages the knowledge transfer to society and promotes the inclusion of artistic disciplines as a fundamental part of the research processes. Through these activities, experts and researchers can collect data, information or ideas that allow them to continue working in their studies, research and laboratories. Among the activities carried out within this line stand out “Información vs Memoria” (2018), “Sistemas Complejos” (2019)“La Maldición de la Corona” (2020).

Sociocultural and Territory activities. Within this line, the Epica creates the “Èpica i Singular” (2019, 2017) project that aims to provide job placement for young people at risk of social exclusion. Starting from the learning of new skills and the application of the Epica methodology, the participants carry out a new scenic and artistic project in which they apply the knowledge acquired, both regulated and non-regulated skills. Along the same line, the Foundation develops the “Cubiculum Apertum” (2019) project, guided to pre-adolescents and which aims to bring collective and cooperative work closer to the different local audiences, creating solid links between the population of the area and the of new tools promoting cultural activity and the use of libraries as a space for experimentation.

Residences. Epica has opened its doors to companies, institutions, associations, and artistic groups, creating and producing tailor-made projects, in which the Epica methodology is used with the aim of improving competitiveness in terms of creativity and innovation, modernizing processes, carrying out proofs of concept or think of certain processes. Within this line, the Foundation has developed projects, between others, for the BAU Design University (“BAU – El Cerebro”, 2018), the Danish school of arts Kulturentreprenør (“El Moderno Prometeo”, 2019), the artistic creation association La FORTeRESse (“LEAVeS”, 2018), or the Zetsky Theater of Montenegro, among others.

Dissemination, knowledge transfer and internationalization. Epica works on the dissemination and knowledge transfer in a transversal way, opening all its activities to the public, pushing them to participate in both, experiments and analysis of the results, as well as the intrinsic reflection process in each of the activities. In this way, the scientific publications stand out “La Maldición de la Corona: Revisiting videoconference as a system to foster group creativity” or “Reducing implicit cognitive biases through the performing arts”. Within this line, the Foundation promotes links with other national and international centers, participating in events, conferences, cycles, congresses, and fairs promoting the internationalization of culture.
