About the ECSA 2026 Conference

The 6th European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) Conference will take place in Oulu, Finland, hosted by the University of Oulu in the year the city holds the title of European Capital of Culture.

ECSA 2026 is one of Europe’s leading gatherings dedicated to citizen science, bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, civil society actors, artists, and innovators from across Europe and beyond. The conference introduces a renewed, inclusive format designed to strengthen collaboration, broaden networks, and foster meaningful societal impact.

The theme of the 2026 edition, “Citizen Science: Bridging Centre and Periphery”, highlights the diversity of contexts in which citizen science operates, from metropolitan centres to remote regions, and its connections to sustainability, culture, governance, health, and local development.

ENoLL Session: Living Labs and Citizen Science

On Tuesday, 3 March 2026, at 12:45 (local time), as part of the ECSA 2026 Conference, ENoLL, together with partners of the ENFORCE project, will host a dedicated roundtable discussion exploring the relationship between Living Labs and citizen science.

This roundtable session will explore the dynamic intersection between Living Labs and citizen science, focusing on how these two participatory approaches can be combined to foster innovation, inclusivity, and societal impact.

Living Labs naturally engage quadruple helix stakeholders, academia, industry, public authorities, and citizens, making them particularly well-suited environments for implementing citizen science initiatives.

Drawing on concrete case studies from across Europe, and in particular experiences from the ENFORCE project, the session will:

  • Showcase how citizen science has been embedded within Living Lab settings
  • Highlight practical applications, benefits, and implementation challenges
  • Explore how citizen challenge approaches can be integrated into Living Lab frameworks

Through the roundtable discussion, participants will reflect on the evolving role of citizens, not only as participants, but as active contributors to research and innovation processes. The session will also explore future trends, inclusivity considerations, and ways to ensure long-term impact when applying citizen science within Living Labs.
