2016 Info Day on the Horizon 2020 Smart Cities and Communities

On Friday, 23 September 2016, ENoLL has joined the Info Day on Smart Cities and Communities that was hosted by the European Commission. The event targeted potential applicants to the Smart Cities & Communities topic of the 2016-2017 Horizon 2020 Work programme ‘Cross-cutting activities’, Smart and Sustainable Cities Call.

On Friday, 23 September 2016, ENoLL has joined the Info Day on Smart Cities and Communities that was hosted by the European Commission. The event targeted potential applicants to the Smart Cities & Communities topic of the 2016-2017 Horizon 2020 Work programme ‘Cross-cutting activities’, Smart and Sustainable Cities Call.

We also participated in the “poster session” where we presented our network of Living Labs and forged new lighthouse project invitations to our Living Labs and Cities and Regions.

The following topics were discussed at the Info Day: 

  • Smart Cities & Communities – Overview of lighthouse approach and projects & policy context
  • Presentation of 2017 Smart Cities & Communities call
  • Key steps of the evaluation process
  • What evaluators are looking for
  • Dos and don’ts of submitting a proposal
  • The link to the structural funds

Key requirements were introduced in the presentations of the day:

– Applicants are to use all topics (energy, transportation and ICT) in solutions

– The Commission is looking for demand-driven, integrated innovative solutions for cities as well as business models in order to guarantee sustainability beyond the project lifetime

– Very detailed information was provided about technical details to be fulfilled by the applicants, non-eligible and eligible costs guiding the proposal, evaluation criteria highlighting the importance of impact (impact factor 1.5).

– Performance monitoring as well as replication and investment plans were highlighted 

– Importance of citizen-involvement 

– the applicants were strongly advised to look also for additional sources of funding. 

A networking event, organised by the EU Directorate-General for Energy, took place in the second part of the day. It featured free networking as well as a poster exhibition were selected participants highlighted their project ideas. ENoLL office represented the network with a stand including a brand new poster of ENoLL offer for projects. Dozens of interested representatives of different organisations received information what ENoLL can bring to the projects through the network of living labs.
