Living Lab in Gerontechnology for Age-Friendly Home

Established in 2022 under the Hong Kong Housing Society Elderly Resources Centre (ERC), the Living Lab in Gerontechnology for Age-Friendly Home (AFHLL) functions as both a participatory design process and a real-home testing environment dedicated to advancing innovation in age-friendly living.

As a design process, AFHLL actively involves older adults as co-designers. By experiencing emerging age-friendly home products and offering direct feedback, they help developers refine solutions to better meet real-life needs.

At the heart of AFHLL is a fully equipped, simulated home environment located at ERC, where older adults interact with home product prototypes in a realistic setting. This space serves as a testbed for evaluation and supports user-centred innovation.

By bridging research, industry and community, AFHLL fosters cross-sector collaboration to co-create practical, inclusive solutions — from smart home systems to assistive devices. This reflects the Hong Kong Housing Society’s (HKHS) commitment to integrated care that supports ageing in place, and exemplifies HKHS’ role as a housing laboratory exploring innovative solutions and pilot projects for the city’s evolving residential needs.
