CALLIOPE – One Health Open Innovation Living Lab Taranto

Hosted by the Municipality and Local Health Authority of Taranto in collaboration with CTE Taranto, CALLIOPE is an accredited ENoLL Living Lab advancing One Health and urban health through interdisciplinary research, citizen engagement and evidence-based innovation. Operating within the Inter-institutional Centre for Urban Health (ASL Taranto, Municipality of Taranto and ARPA Puglia), it investigates how environmental, social and lifestyle determinants interact across human, animal, food and ecosystem health. 

CALLIOPE combines population-based epidemiology, cross-ecosystem multi-omics, biomarkers and artificial intelligence to understand how urban exposures—including air pollution, environmental noise and social inequalities—influence healthy ageing, cognitive decline and other chronic diseases. Moving beyond siloed approaches, it applies causal-inference AI and planetary health analytics to generate actionable evidence for prevention and public policy. 

Grounded in ENoLL co-creation principles, FAIR open science and equitable, gender-sensitive design, CALLIOPE translates scientific knowledge into citizen-centred solutions and scalable health interventions. Its work is grounded in the evidence that coordinated, multidomain lifestyle interventions—including healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, cognitive stimulation, social engagement and vascular risk management—can enhance health outcomes, promote healthy ageing and strengthen cognitive resilience across the population. The Living Lab actively contributes to the Horizon Europe MISTRAL project and is expanding international collaborations across Europe and North America to advance research on the exposome, brain ageing and sustainable urban health.”
