This two-day Deep Dive marks the launch of the Regenerative Tourism & Placemaking Working Group and is designed to explore how tourism and placemaking can actively contribute to urban regeneration.
Hosted by the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, this interactive session brings together Living Lab members, experts, and practitioners to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and co-create strategies for sustainable, inclusive, and community-driven tourism.
Through hands-on experiences, city tours, and co-design sessions, participants will walk away with new tools, insights, and connections to apply regenerative thinking in their own urban and tourism contexts.
The Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab was founded by the Inholland University of Applied Sciences and it is based in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It is at the forefront of addressing societal challenges through urban tourism, leading the way in shaping sustainable solutions for the future of the Leisure and Tourism industry. The LL operates as a dynamic platform for (trans)disciplinary applied education and research, promoting collaboration across diverse domains of expertise and knowledge areas. This approach ensures projects are firmly grounded in the real world – yielding impactful research, innovative tools, thought leadership, and publications. Rooted in the community, the LL adopt a quintuple helix perspective – taking biodiversity into account, maintaining a longitudinal focus, and being committed to leaving a legacy through their interventions.

11 and 12 March 2026
The Deep Dive session will take place over two days in two dynamic urban locations in the Netherlands — each offering unique insights into regenerative tourism and placemaking.
The session will begin with an introduction to the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab and the Professorship of New Urban Tourism. This will be followed by a Place Exploration and Sense-Making tour, using participatory tools to explore the local area and set the stage for deeper discussions on regenerative placemaking.
Participants will engage in the Healthy Placemaking Project, which includes a mix of site-specific interventions, a clay-based co-creation activity, and interaction with local partners. After a shared lunch, the programme continues with an Escape Room experience focused on transitions in tourism, offering a playful and reflective take on systemic change.
The day concludes with a City Tour through Rotterdam, showcasing applied examples of New Urban Tourism and regenerative approaches. The first day ends with drinks and dinner, providing time for informal exchange and networking.
The second day will open with a session exploring a regenerative tourism future for Amsterdam, including presentations on overtourism, the Loop Model for activating regenerative practices through Living Labs, and co-design approaches in education. Guest contributions will include Thijs Koster from Rotterdam Partners.
The morning continues with a Walk & Talk through Buikslotermeerplein, during which participants will observe and map the space using Miro and explore acupuncture placemaking interventions developed by the lab. After lunch, the programme shifts to a Dress Rehearsal session with lab learners from ULTL Amsterdam, offering a co-learning experience through presentation, feedback, and reflection.
The Deep Dive will conclude with an informal networking and drinks session, offering participants the opportunity to consolidate insights and make new connections.
