Design & the City 2016 is a conference organized by Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences from the 19th to the 22nd of April. This summit explores citizen-centered design approaches for the smart city. Its central theme is the role of design(ers) to create opportunities and practices for citizens, (social) entrepreneurs and policy makers towards more liveable, sustainable and sociable urban futures.
On the 22nd of April ENoLL and Tampere UAS co-organize the workshop “Lose your way: Towards a Citizen-driven city”, a full-day workshop involving a few ENoLL members and exploring the concept of Smart Cities through a lens that promotes citizens as the driving force of urban innovation and urban planning.
Participants will have the opportunity to share their best practices and discover the ones pre-selected by the organizers, like “Lose your Way” a pilot projects developed by Tampere University in the context of MEDAIA-project that implements mobile technology in urban planning, Design for Europe, a EU initiative supporting design and innovation in Europe, and ECIM, a project aiming to create smarter mobility services across Europe.

GOOD TO KNOW
We set up a dedicated Facebook group to pre-present these submissions online and discuss them all co-creatively as a way to engage before workshop start.
We have built a prototype mobile application for the Lose Your Way city walk. The application works in Android and iPhone systems and users can upload the app to their phones. The app is based on maps, and during the walk it records users’ routes, which can be published and shared on the app’s website. It also allows users to create their own routes. In Amsterdam we’ll use an offline map to avoid extra data transfer costs (gps is needed). The use of the app is not required during the walk but it is an extra-opportunity offered to participants to discover Amsterdam’s streets in a new way.
Workshop is held in Amsterdam at the Amsterdam Knowledge Mile (more info on location can be found here) from 9.30am to 5pm. Workshop ticket: 25 euros for coffee, lunch and other organizational costs. Please send a message to firstname.lastname@example.org should you have any question on this workshop.
