Join ENoLL and Eurocities for this collaborative workshop at WIRE2016 in Eindhoven on the 10th of June on Open and citizen-driven Innovation ecosystems in cities:
Objectives of the session
In alignment with the main topics addressed by the conference this session will address how (and what) local innovation ecosystems contribute to the competitiveness, job creation, sustainable growth and social progress of cities and regions. In particular the session focuses on the role of cities and other key stakeholders, including citizens, in those ecosystems and on the R&I policy and funding opportunities to support them.
Cities are the place where innovation policies and strategies are tested and implemented involving a great number of public and private actors. The ways in which the different actors of the ecosystem collaborate and interact are crucial for the success of those policies. In the session we will look at how local authorities cooperate and work together with the other players of the innovation ecosystems and how Living Labs operate as intermediaries among cities, firms, third sector and research organisations as well as citizens for joint value co-creation, rapid prototyping or validation to scale and speed up innovation.
In particular we will focus on the involvement of citizens and local communities in the experimentation, development and implementation of new concept and models.
Citizens are at the heart of innovation. To find solutions that respond to the real needs of people, it is important to involve citizens in the process. We will discuss new innovation models based on the co-creation, collaboration and co-participation of citizens identifying the opportunities but also the challenges for cities.
The development and greater use of digital technologies enable innovation in cities. EU research and innovation policies and funding that can stimulate a more and better use of digital technologies are thus crucial for stimulating innovation. As part of the session, we will finally identify and discuss EU policy and funding opportunities that can help cities in their innovation process.
Cities place citizens at the center of innovation and need to find the instruments to better mold the opportunities offered by new technological concepts and solutions to specific needs and aspirations of local contexts, cultures and creative potentials. In other words, cities are starting to function as Living Lab ecosystems for co-creation and large-scale experimentation of new concepts and models.
The session will cover the following specific topics:

For those of you unfamiliar with the other host of this workshop EUROCITIES is the network of major cities in Europe and acts as the political platform and the voice for cities in the EU. With over 130 cities in 35 countries, they cover the majority of Europe’s capital and second tier cities and together account for one quarter of the EU’s population. Through the network, cities connect, exchange and learn from one another across a wide range of policy areas such as innovation and Knowledge Society Forum (KSF)
