“Design for Europe – Making a connection” is a session organised by ENoLL and Design for Europe initiative. The workshop will take place on April 1st (2-4.30pm) at La Biennale during the Forum Design & Innovation. Design for Europe is a European initiative addressing the imbalance in the strength and capability of European organisations to adopt and implement design-led innovation policies, programmes and actions. The workshop, aiming to connect design professionals, design initiatives, Living Labbers, policy makers and industry, wants to advance in the value created by Living Labs in empowering citizens, users and communities in design-led innovation activities. The workshop also aims to bring together different European design-led initiatives with strong user engagement component.
AGENDA
1. Introduction to Design for Europe
14-14.20h
This introductory session will focus on Design for Europe, a European initiative whose vision is to accelerate design-driven innovation in order to boost innovation, growth and job creation across the EU by raising awareness of how design-driven innovation already increases efficiency in public services and drives business growth across Europe.
Speakers:
John Mathers, Design Council
Antti Valle, European Commission (Policy Officer)
2. Introduction to Living Labs – Cite du Design

A second block will investigate how design can conceive and develop new ways of living through objects, images and services making use of Living Lab methodologies.
Speaker:
Mikael MANGYOKU, Cité du Design
This presentation will introduce Design Creative City Living Lab. Based on the various communities and profiles from the Manufacture Plaine Achille district, the Design Creative City Living Lab acts as a powerful mean to drive large scale initiatives in the urban area and close the gap between end-users and companies through experimentations like the Labos.
3. Business Design
14.30-15.20h
This session aims to discover how service design and Living Lab methodologies support business and SMEs in meeting organisations’ need to be competitive, so as to grasp stakeholders/customers’ rising expectations in terms of choice and quality.
Dimitri Schuurman, iMinds
How can Living Labs be used to foster an entrepreneurial climate and to help SMEs to innovate and help them to the market? Based on the practical experiences of iLab.o, the Living Lab division of iMinds, a Flemish ICT research center, we developed a Living Lab model tailored towards the needs of start-ups and SMEs. Within this presentation, we will illustrate this approach by means of practical examples and present the results from the impact assessment research that we carry out among the participating SMEs.
Neil Gridley, Design Council
The presentation will share a Design for Europe case study from the Design Council’s ‘Design Leadership Programme’. In particular the presentation will share how User Centred Design has helped the start-up business shape their business, product and brand to become a successful company.
Grigoris Chatzikostas, FRACTALs
How a simple problem can enhance building a creative design process and results in a model that facilitates your work and enlarge your business?
You can get to know a good example presented by Grigoris Chatzikostas, (project coordinator of FRACTALS – FIWARE/FISPACE Accelerator project and managing director of PA4ALL Living Lab – member of ENoLL) who managed to bring ICT and agricultural actors/professionals together to bridge the gap between their areas and start working in collaboration on building a more effective working ecosystem on their field.
